“Art is what we do when we're truly alive…. Art isn’t a result; it’s a journey. The challenge of our time is to find a journey worthy of your heart and your soul.” (Seth Godin)
CFUW/Kanata has made art with its unique fundraisers. Its current and arguably the most ambitious one of all is the production of a community concert, the mounting of an art exhibition and the organization of a silent auction. What an incredible and challenging journey! This fundraiser is happening in one amazing event: ENCHANTED MOSAIC…An Evening with the Arts, at the Earl of March Secondary School on Saturday, OCTOBER 26th, starting at 6:00 p.m. This is the last Saturday before Halloween so parents are encouraged to treat their children to an arts experience and children are encouraged to show up in costumes. We will provide their treats. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for students and children. This Evening with the Arts is truly a cultural mosaic, designed to be family friendly, inspiring and stimulating for all ages. The music ranges from classical to folk and the dance from ballet to contemporary. Displays of visual art from area high schools complement and complete the evening’s arts experience. For this first event, we chose to give young local artists the excellent opportunity to add a public art exhibition to their portfolio and also to offer their high schools a chance to showcase their arts programs. Rounding out the event is a silent auction of items such as a guitar, a Triplet Light music stand and more. We are indebted to the various artists in the community and within our membership who are gifting us with their creativity and are very responsibly using it to benefit the CFUW/Kanata Scholarship Trust. PROGRAM 6 -7pm Visual Arts Exhibition: Artwork by young artists from area high schools Silent Auction 7-7:30pm CARNIVAL of the ANIMALS by Camille Saint-Saëns · played by the Kanata Symphony Orchestra [directed by Yves Lacoursiere; accompanied by Genevieve Thouin, Natalia Titkova (Earl of March) and Tony Dunn] · poems by Jack Prelutsky [the first Children's Poet Laureate of the USA] · Narrator is Laurence Wall of the CBC. [The orchestra plays the specific music following a poem describing each animal.] · Interpretive dance by West Carleton Secondary School dancers [directed by Alison Hauch] and South Carleton High School dancers [directed by Stacey Hamilton] 7:30-7:50pm Intermission 7:50-8:30pm Music of Canada · Bagpiper & Sherry’s School of Highland Dancers [directed by Sherry Sharpe, piper Neal Sharpe] · Holy Trinity High School Rhythm & Blues Band [directed by Neil Bateman] · CFUW/Kanata’s Guitar Groovers & All Saints High School Guitarists [directed by Joy Forbes] · Ottawa Catholic School Board Chamber Choir [directed by Jamie Loback, accompanied by Tony Dunn] I am the Artistic Director for this community showcase. Let me know if you want tickets. It is not to be missed!!! In 1954, Shirley Dolan first attended S.S. No. 12 Fitzroy until Grade 7. Her older brother, Jerry also went there. When the weather was very cold, Jerry would move his desk as close to the stove as possible. As a result, his desk had many scorch marks over the years.
Shirley recalls that one male teacher encouraged all this students to hide when the music teacher arrived. They all found hiding places and were very quiet. The music teacher thought the school was closed for the day, so he left, and the students didn’t get their music lesson that day. It seems advocating for the arts wasn't high on the agenda back then, as (unfortunately) it often is today. |
