On Sunday, April 9, 2017, I attended the Eastern Ontario Drama League Full Length Play Festival Awards Brunch in Brockville. The Brockville Theatre Guild had done a beautiful job of hosting the event at the local golf course. Kanata Theatre's play "Schoolhouse" was the finalist in 8 categories - Set Design (Dorothy Shaw), Best Visual Presentation, Outstanding Student contribution (Jonas Blackburn, Olivia Brown, Khalil Burns, Laila Burns, Olivia Case, Zachary Chabot, Sarah Fullerton, & Simon Lindsay-Stodart), Best Use of Speech, Best Supporting Actress (Laila Burns), Best Actress in a Major Roll (Reba Sigler), Adjudicator's Award for stage managing (Rachel Worton) and another Adjudicator's Award for acting (Zachary Chabot).
I am pleased to announce that Dorothy Shaw won the Peterborough Theatre Guild Award for Set Design. We had numerous authentic pieces on the set - 8 original student desks, original teacher's desk & chair, 1927 Confederation Plaque, 1936-1938 globe, Neilson Chocolate bar map, Union Jack, Ontario flags, 1938 teacher's register, and period textbooks which I'm sure contributed to her winning the award. There were four productions that had students in the cast and/or crew. All students were recognised as the future of live theatre. Jonas Blackburn (11) came away as the winner of the Thérèse May Memorial Award for Outstanding Student Contribution for his portrayal of Milton. I was so pleased! I loved it when he boldly showed off his salpiglossis, called Colonel Burnett a bully, and sang as the banker in the Christmas scene. The cast of "Schoolhouse" was very talented and their joy of acting really shone through. I hope they cherish the time we spent together and all the friendships we have developed. Putting on “Schoolhouse” was a team effort, and I’m so proud to have been a part of that team. I look forward to seeing the cast and crew around Kanata Theatre, or on a larger stage, in the years ahead. On Friday, February 17th, John P. Kelly will be adjudicating Kanata Theatre's production of "Schoolhouse" for the Eastern Ontario Drama League. The audience is welcome to hear the adjudication after the play. He will also be giving a more in depth adjudication on Saturday morning, February 18th, at 10am at Kanata Theatre. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
It has been so exciting hearing the audiences' reactions to the play "Schoolhouse" by Leanna Brodie. People have told me the play really captures the life inside a one-room schoolhouse and they liked the way we brought it to life. I am very proud of the way the cast and crew of our production have captured the "magic" of the era. Congratulations to everyone involved!
The audience reactions to "Schoolhouse" by Leanna Brodie has been fantastic! Standing ovations!!! Get your tickets at the Kanata Theatre Box Office 613 831-4435 or on-line at kanatatheatre.com where you can select your seats. The play runs until Saturday, February 18 at 8pm.

Can you help?
Hello; just discovered your website while searching for info on my great Grandmother Margaret Costello. I recently found her obituary in the Ottawa Journal, which states that before her marriage she was "a school teacher at the Montreal School and also at Leitrim". She turned 18 while still at home in Freelton Ontario, in 1891, and married Albert Blais in 1905. I assume her teaching career would have been during those 14 years. Have you found any information on either the schools she taught at or Maggie herself? I would so appreciate any help you could give! Regards, Lynda Konrad [email protected] I've recently purchased the schoolhouse in Marlbank. I'm now renovating it to reveal one of the original classrooms.
S.S. 18, is a 2 room schoolhouse in Marlbank it was built in 1905. Do you know of a good resource for renovation information for schoolhouses? You can check out my blog. https://mbankschoolhouse.wordpress.com Simon White [email protected] |
