Shirley recalls that one male teacher encouraged all this students to hide when the music teacher arrived. They all found hiding places and were very quiet. The music teacher thought the school was closed for the day, so he left, and the students didn’t get their music lesson that day. It seems advocating for the arts wasn't high on the agenda back then, as (unfortunately) it often is today.
In 1954, Shirley Dolan first attended S.S. No. 12 Fitzroy until Grade 7. Her older brother, Jerry also went there. When the weather was very cold, Jerry would move his desk as close to the stove as possible. As a result, his desk had many scorch marks over the years.
