Hugh’s wife purchased my book and Hugh noticed the name of a Miss McCord who taught at SS No.11 in Goulbourn in the thirties. He is interested in finding out if she was related to his family of McCord's where his Dad (Harold McCord) was born on Tenth Line Huntley in 1910. Hugh’s grandfather was James McCord who later moved to Stittsville and finally to Kars, Ontario. He was the Warden and Reeve of Carleton County during the 1920's and was Sunday School Superintendent at that time, probably in Kars. His son Cameron's wife, Laura McCord was principal at Kars Public School for many years. If anyone has information to help Hugh find out more about his family history, please respond to my blog.
What a nice surprise it was to receive an email from a fellow author. Hugh McCord has recently published a book called "Personal Reflections of Ottawa Past" which is a collection of 32 short stories about Ottawa in the 40's and 50's. The main stories are of Henry Birks and Sons; The Ottawa Journal where I took my apprenticeship in 1957; The Famous Rideau Club; The Capitol Theatre; Hope's Bookstore; Charles Ogilvy's; The old Windsor Hotel and many more.

I was alerted by an Ottawa friend to this book. I'm just finishing up a piece about Ottawa in the '30s so lots of McCord's recollections would match my own. I grew up there in that era, left in 1950 (worked in adctg at Ottawa Journal)Returned in 2006 and came back to Vancouver in mid-winter 2009 The extreme weather did me in!!I had been spending a month each year for a few years researching at Nat Archives (including some family stuff). I've been writing professionally for over 60 years and during my recent Ottawa life worked with Harriett at City Archives on their Ottawa history project. Now I am mostly doing volunteer stuff, newsletters etc. but am inspired to pull up my '30s Ottawa notes and polish that project. I wonder if Mr McCord belongs to Ottawa Historical Society. I do. Enough rambling! My point is I'd like to read the book. How much is it? and how could I get a copy (depending on price)Over the years I've written Canal etc history for kid's schhol readers and some kid's Bytown stories. Had over 1000 children's stories pub. (after all it's been 60 years) Now I'm working on a young reader mystery set in Stratford in 1578, lead character a boy named Will Shakespeare. elizabeth carroll, vancouver
